He is not looking good, reserved,stereotypical and many such criticism made on Vijay continuously ever since he started his acting carrier, but still one got to accept that his stardom and track record in Box office never fails, Thanks to his hardcore fans who supports him almost for two decades.This article is all about Vijay's adventurous roller coaster ride.
To be frank, Vijay's entry into K-Town happened quite easy, Since his father SA Chandrasekar is one of the hot shot director who directed almost all top actors in India including Rajinkanth,Kamal,Vijayakan
Though his first Film Naalaya Theerpu directed by SA Chandrasekar, critics trashed the film ,they said this man can't act, dance, fight so why he wants to be a hero? Sendhoorapandi in which Vijay acted with Vijaykanth took him to B & C center where he enjoys a super stardom now ,Thanks to Vijaykanth who was a King in those centers, His films like Deva, Rasigan,Rajavin Parvailiey(he acted with his peer & competitor Ajith) went to become a average grossers.
Poove Unakaga :
Poove Unakaga is actually Vijay's first film which accepted unanimously by both critics and audience,Vijay delivered a matured performance in this film which was his first blockbuster, After Poove Unakaga there is no set back for Vijay, he delivered series of hits in a row,then he acted with the legendary actor Sivaji ganesan in "once more",A critic from New Strait Times said "Viay breezes through and he shows no nervousness opposite the great Sivaji", Recently Suhasini in an interview with Vijay remembered that during this time in a function me and many others said that "Vijay is the first actor who delivered success among the young generation and proved that even young actors can deliver a success equal to Super stars".
Then he starred in Neruku Ner where he acted with his close friend Suriya is also a hit, directed by Vasanth this film is produced by Maniratnam., Another Huge break happened in the name of "Kathalukku Mariyadhai" which was a biggest block buster at that time,Directed by Fazil this film took Vijay to family audience and increased his star power, Ninaithen Vandhai ,Priyamudan also become a hit and distributors felt vijay is a bankable star, in fact Vijay got a great appreciation from critic for his villainy acting in "Priyamudan" almost all leading daily were in full praise for Vijay including, "The Hindu".
Though Endrendrum Kathal(flop), Nenjinile,Minsaraka kanna are average grossers, his Thullatha manathum Thullum is again a block buster, Then Vijay did Kannukul Nilavu with the critically acclaimed director Fazil again ,It got a tremendous response from the critics, but the film is a commercial failure.
Hat-rick:
Then Vijay Delivered a Hat-Rick in the form of Kushi ,Priyamanavaley, Friends and even they arranged a success function for all the three films Friends,Badri and priyamanavaley and the star power of Vijay increased tremendously,they even placed him next to Rajinkanth during that time, but Vijay couldn't capitalize it ,he delivered flops & average ventures like Tamizhan,Youth,Bagavathi,V
Mass Hero :
The Mass Image which Vijay is enjoying now started with a newcomer "Ramana" in the form of Thirumalai,with this film Vijay proved that he can even act in Commercial films, in fact Vijay was initially reluctant in doing commercial films because he was comfortable in doing realistic stories, but Thirumalai pushed him to another level, Then came the majestic "Ghilli", this is the first tamil film which collected 50 crores in Box office ,it is very rare for a non Shankar or non Rajini film to gross such a huge amount,Vijay become a mass hero and in fact many producers wants his call sheet at that time, Then came Thirupaachi,Sivakasi,Madur
This is the time media placed him next to kamal and Rajini, his Sachein competed with Rajini's Chandramukhi and Kamal's Mumbai Express, though Sachein is not a blockbuster like Chandramukhi, the film is a hit and earned profit for Thanu, The 200 day poster of Sachein & Chandramukhi raised the eyebrows of many.
Then came Aathi which was a disaster at Box office,critics trashed the film .Vijay should have changed his formula from Aathi since it is almost a red alert for the actor, but don't know whether it is fortunate or unfortunate ,Pokkiri which had a similar mass story become a blockbuster which made Vijay to follow the same mass masala route.
String Of Failures:
Vijay's failure mode started with Azhagiya Thamizh magan ,Kuruvi ,Villu,Vettaikaran and Sura. among these five movies Vettaikaran was alone a modest success, Distributors and theater owners questioned on Vijay's star power.media,critics all trashed Vijay's status in Box offices, Adding to the fuel Vijay earned lot of opposition from the Political side.
Distributors and Theater owners refused to buy his Kaavalan, until he settled the loss occurred for them through his films. During this time the only hope for Vijay were his fans. Though Vijay settled the amount to distributors,Some Vested interests tried to stop screening Kaavalan . But Vijay came out with flying colours with his huge fan following. Down to the history similar Kind of situation happened to Rajikanth after Baba and for MGR during "Ulagam Sutrum Valiban", Though MGR was a great star he could not release the film as many Vested interests compelled theater owners not to screen the film.
Thanks to the change in Political power,Vijay came with a bang through Velayutham, Though the film faced a heavy competition with 7aam arivu, it went on to become a Hit.
Much Needed Change:
Though Kaavalan & Velayudham were hits,I would say Vijay's decision in choosing Nanban is a turning point in his carrier, during the string of failures Vijay lost his popularity among the family audience,Suriya become the Family friendly actor and he almost replaced Vijay. But Nanban took him again to the same position which he enjoyed before Azhagiya Tamizh Magan,Thanks to Shankar. His acting is well praised by the media people,critics and it was one of the biggest hit of this year.
My Suggestion:
I believe Vijay is in the right track, his choice of doing films with Experienced Directors like AR Murugadoss & AL Vijay is really a boost for his carrier,If he took this decision after Pokkiri, his status would have reached somewhere else, I would like to quote the same thing what Suhasini Maniratnam's said to Vijay in Haasini's Pesum padam "This is a golden period in Tamil cinema, almost 20 Gem of directors are there in Tamil cinema, we know that hero like Vijay are very talented,but why don't they chose good directors, Siddique is the only good director worked with Vijay in last four years(before Kaavalan)".
I hope that Vijay received Suhasini's message, Vijay can go places if he choose good directors because he enjoys great stardom, his commitment towards promotions are excelent,The best example is his recent Thuppaki is hot in Trade and the Business For Kerala,Karnataka,Andhra pradhesh reaching new heights,Hope All is well with Vijay.
